Realdania transfers shareholding in Foundation House in Brussels to Philea
Realdania By & Byg's shareholding in the company European Foundation House (Philanthropy House) in Brussels will be transferred to Philea – the European membership organization for philanthropic actors, which has been housed in the building since 2013.
In 2011, Realdania joined forces with five other European foundations to establish the European Foundation House in Brussels, aiming to consolidate and strengthen philanthropic work in Europe and to create suitable facilities for the European Foundation Centre (EFC), now known as Philea. Philanthropy House, as the building is called today, houses not only Philea but several other foundations and organizations.
"When we joined this initiative, our goal was to support the organization’s work and knowledge sharing and collaboration across the philanthropic sector in Europe. And to showcase Philea's commendable efforts. That goal has long been achieved. Today, Philea is a strong organization that is central to the collaboration between philanthropic actors in Europe and with several foundations in the USA. There is no longer a need for us to own a shareholding in Philanthropy House. It is much better for it to be with Philea, which resides in the building," says Jesper Nygård, CEO in Realdania.
Delphine Moralis, CEO of Philea, states: "Realdania is renowned for building up urban infrastructure and investing in improving quality of life. In supporting first Philanthropy House as a project, and now supporting Philea by transferring its shareholding, Realdania is also building up the infrastructure and improving the quality of European philanthropy."
Philanthropy House is owned by the Belgian company European Foundation House S.A. (EFH). Realdania's involvement began in 2011 as a philanthropic investment through its subsidiary Realdania By & Byg, where the ownership of the shareholding has since been held.
The purchase of the property and its subsequent renovation and refurbishment were carried out by Realdania By & Byg on behalf of the group of foundations and the founders of the European Foundation House. The transfer of the shareholding in the company amounting to 1 million euros from Realdania By & Byg to Philea will take effect after approval by the Belgian authorities.
The European Foundation Centre (EFC) was founded in 1989 by seven European foundations and rebranded in 2022 following the merger with Donors and Foundations Networks in Europe (DAFNE). As a membership organization, Philea represents a diverse range of philanthropic actors and works to strengthen the philanthropic sector in Europe.
Realdania has been a member of the organization since 2007, and the association's management has actively participated in several of Philea's governing bodies over the years. CEO Jesper Nygård is currently a board member of Philea.
